2026 Athletic HOF: Mark McCormick, Fairmont East High School Class of 1981

Mark McCormick is a 1981 graduate of Fairmont East High School. During his time at Fairmont East, Mark earned eight varsity letters: two in football, three in track and field and three in basketball. His track career includes being a part of the state qualifying 4 X 400 team that still holds the record for the fastest relay time throughout all of Kettering Fairmont High School history for track and field. Mark, at the time of his graduation, held the Fairmont East high jump and 120 low meter records. In football, he was a punter and played wide receiver. In basketball, Mark was one of four players in Fairmont history to eclipse the 1,000-point career scoring mark, with 1,064 in his 3-year varsity basketball career.

Mark’s senior year, he averaged 22.9 points and 6.4 assists per game, and he earned post season honors to include District 15 First team, Journal Herald News All Area, Dayton Daily News First team, WOL first team, and Southwest District Ohio 2nd team. His junior year, he led the team in scoring and Fairmont East won the WOL and district championship before losing in the regional final. The 1979-1980 Fairmont East team has the distinction of achieving the deepest OHSAA tournament run by a Fairmont boys basketball team for at least the past half century, at a time where there were only three competitive divisions.

Mark accepted a scholarship to Wright State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree and was a key contributor on the 1983 NCAA Division II National Championship Team. Mark’s working career was in public education, ending in a role in administration with Wilmington Schools. Mark is now retired and lives in Florida.
