2026 Athletic HOF: Sarah VonderBrink, Kettering Fairmont High School Class of 2009

Sarah VonderBrink, a 2009 graduate of Kettering Fairmont High School, stands as one of the most accomplished and well-rounded student-athletes in school history. A rare three-sport standout, VonderBrink earned an extraordinary nine varsity letters—four each in track and field and soccer, and one in swim and dive—while excelling at the highest levels of competition. Her impact across multiple programs earned her the prestigious JoAnn Ray Award, recognizing athletes who play multiple sports and leave a lasting mark on each.

In track and field, VonderBrink was a four-year contributor and team leader, competing primarily in the high jump and hurdles. As a freshman, she placed fourth in the GWOC high jump, won a district championship, and advanced to regionals. Her sophomore season saw continued growth as she finished third in the GWOC, was district runner-up, regional runner-up, and qualified for the state meet, placing 10th. During her junior year, she emerged as one of the conference’s elite athletes, winning the GWOC high jump championship, capturing a district title in the 300-meter hurdles, and qualifying for both the indoor and outdoor state meets in the high jump.

As a senior captain, VonderBrink delivered one of the finest seasons in Fairmont track history. She was a triple champion at the Firebird Track and Field Invitational (high jump, 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), placed multiple times at the GWOC, district, and regional levels, and qualified for the state meet in three events. Sarah finished third at the indoor state meet and sixth at the outdoor state meet in the high jump, along with a state appearance in the 100-meter hurdles.

On the soccer field, VonderBrink was equally dominant as a midfielder and forward. She earned All-GWOC honors three times, including First Team selections her junior and senior seasons, and was named First Team All-Miami Valley as a senior. That year, she served as team captain, leading the Firebirds with 12 goals and 28 points. Her career totals—29 goals, 21 assists, and 79 points—reflect both her scoring ability and playmaking skill. She was also named Second Team All-Ohio, cementing her status among the state’s elite players.

Despite receiving track scholarship offers from major programs such as Ohio State and Xavier, VonderBrink followed her passion for soccer, continuing her career at Bowling Green State University. From 2009–2013, she appeared in 72 matches, led the team in game-winning goals, assists, and scoring in multiple seasons, and earned Preseason All-MAC First Team recognition along with Academic All-MAC honors as a senior.

Former Fairmont coach Jeff Kuns summarized her legacy best: “Her dedication and willingness to sacrifice made her great—on the field, in the classroom, and as a person.” A gifted athlete, leader, and role model, Sarah VonderBrink’s excellence and character embody the very ideals of the Kettering Fairmont Athletic Hall of Fame.

Currently, Sarah is a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) and practices at Hillcrest Hearing and Balance Center in the Greater Dayton area. She resides in southern Ohio with her husband and two kids and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
