Our journey through Kettering City Schools continues! In this edition, we're highlighting more of the schools, programs, and experiences that have left a lasting impact on generations of students. We hope these stories spark memories, celebrate our shared history, and remind you of the many connections that make the KCS community so special.
International Baccalaureate Program:
Each year senior IB Diploma Candidates partner with We Help Two in their annual sock sale to support efforts in our own community and across the world.
This year’s group chose for proceeds to go toward creating a fresh water source in an African Community and met that goal by helping 700 residents of Nyirabadugu whose old water source was an unprotected pipe that allowed surrounding dirt and waste to to mix with the water making it undrinkable. The people of the village had no other water source and as a result, there was constant sickness, especially among the children.
The new project funded the construction of a new artesian well that provides a safe and clean water source for the entire village as the concrete structures/basins will ensure a constant flow of clean water and protect from livestock contaminating the area. The excess water runoff that exits the concrete basin is used to irrigate crops in nearby fields.
In our own community the same group dedicated time to others in the school district on Tuesday, March 31 by spending their morning in their elementary school classrooms, visiting their teachers, reading to students, and answering questions about life in grades 6-12. In the afternoon they traveled to the St. Vincent DePaul shelter in downtown Dayton and spent time cleaning sleeping mats in two of the dormitories and cleaned and organized books and toys for children in the pre-school classroom. They also delivered over 130 pairs of warm socks to families through their Socktober and Socksgiving campaigns.
